Wisdom Teeth Removal
At Dental Home in Bluffton, South Carolina, we understand the fear some patients may have when they hear the words “tooth extraction.” Our patient’s safety always comes first, and you can rest assured that our entire staff will professionally handle your procedure.
What are Wisdom Teeth?
Your third molars are referred to as your wisdom teeth. They are the last teeth to develop and are located in the back of your mouth, behind your second molars. They normally come in between the middle teenage years and your early twenties. Wisdom teeth are often extracted either before or after they come in. However, they must be removed if they are decayed, cause pain or show signs of having a cyst or are infected. Wisdom teeth often get stuck in the jaw, or impacted, and do not come in. This can irritate the gum, causing pain and swelling. In this case, the tooth must be removed. If you need all four wisdom teeth removed, they are usually taken out at the same time. At our Dental Home office, we will begin by taking an X-ray of the area to help plan the best way to remove the tooth/teeth. Make sure you provide the office with a list of all medications you take. These should include prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and supplements. The dentist will discuss with you the different methods of anesthesia and which would be best for your procedure.
What Happens on the Day Wisdom Teeth are Removed?
Most people prefer not experiencing when they have their wisdom teeth removed and usually decide to be sedated. At Dental Home, we will provide you with the appropriate anesthesia options at your consultation. Our office staff has the training, licensing, and experience to provide the various types of anesthesia. Prior to the procedure, we ask our patients to make sure a parent or responsible adult accompanies them to the office the day of the extraction. This person should plan to stay with you the rest of the day. The procedure will take about 30 to 60 minutes. However, you will probably be in the office for 90 minutes. We will provide you with a prescription for the pain that you might experience after the procedure. When you are seated in the surgical room, we will take every opportunity to make you as comfortable as possible.
